Background
The
Kilinochchi District Hospital has been functioning since August
2003 in the town of Kilinochchi in northern Sri Lanka. The
hospital serves as the regional referral center for an estimated
153,000 people living in the Vanni region of northern Sri Lanka
and handles over 700 outpatient/emergency cases on a daily basis.
Despite its importance to the health of the local people, the
Kilinochchi District Hospital functions without a semi-autoanalyser
for basic blood biochemistries. As a result, doctors working in
the hospital find it very difficult to diagnose and treat the
patients under their care. Patients are often forced to pay out
of pocket or travel great distances to have tests done.
